They work with: community paediatricians GPs health visitors other specialist professionals Members of the School Nursing Team visit all schools in Sheffield. The team carries out routine health screening for all pupils. They also carry out planned immunisation programmes. Helping children with special educational needs Other services support pupils with special education needs and disabilities. The Mainstream Schools Therapy Service supports pupils with physical disabilities. There are also support services for pupils with sensory impairments. Services in Sheffield have been working to a 12 month Accelerated Progress Plan to improve transitions for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Whilst the disability service will be responsible for putting in place internal institutional support (exams, learning plans, etc.), they can also help students apply for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA), which will pay for most support that has a financial cost… by other documentation. Once a student has been confirmed as eligible for DSA, they will usually be invited to attend a regional assessment centre. There are centres located around the country, and we currently have four in Sheffield. At the appointment, an assessor will discuss the student’s support needs and suggest strategies, human support and technology that can assist them to break down the barriers that exist for them.
