Some foodbanks require a referral so if you have a social worker, health worker, community support worker,  or voluntary sector help such as Citizen’s Advice Sheffield you can ask them to refer you.

Foodcycle Sheffield Broomhall welcomes anyone to attend and enjoy a free hot meal. No need to book. Just turn up on the day! Come and enjoy company and conversation with others over a delicious meal, prepared with care by FoodCycle volunteers. Every Wednesday at 12.30 pm at the Broomhall Centre, Broomspring Lane, S10 2FD.

Foodcycle Sheffield Parson Cross welcomes anyone to attend and enjoy a free hot meal. No need to book. Just turn up on the day! Every Tuesday at 6.30 pm at Mount Tabor Methodist Church, Wordsworth Avenue Sheffield, S5 8NJ.

St Mary’s Church in the city centre has a Social Supermarket where people who are struggling to afford to feed themselves and their family can shop weekly for food. They also give support with debt advice, and offer a weekly hot meal for £1 each Thursday from 12.15 pm.

Foodhall Project uses donated food to produce meals that are cooked and delivered by volunteers to people in Arbourthorne, Broomhall, Highfield, Manor and Sharrow. The frozen meals are in microwaveable containers but you can also defrost and then heat them up in the oven. No meat or fish so meals are halal and suitable for vegetarians. Pay what you can afford meals. You must be referred by a support organisation or community organisation.

Foodworks run several community cafes in Sheffield offering hot meals, barista coffees, cakes and pastries daily on a Pay What You Can Afford basis with a minimum contribution of £1. Enjoy in their community space, or takeaway by bringing your own container or cup.

Foodworks also have a shop where you can buy a weekly box of fruit, veg and staples along with chilled and frozen food and household goods. Their Just Meals service provides frozen meals for a minimum contribution of £1 per meal each week.

They have food hubs in Handsworth, Sharrow and Upperthorpe, and partner with other organisations to run a hub in Crookesmoor, Darnall, Firth Park, Handsworth, Heeley, Killamarsh, Lowedges, Lowfield, Parson Cross, Stradbroke, Woodhouse, and at the University Sheffield Students Union.

The NOW Church Woodhouse community grocery is dedicated to providing reliable, value for money groceries. 20 items or a level bag of groceries costs £5. Open Tuesday and Friday 11am-1pm.

The Open Kitchen Social Club offers a free lunch, peer support, and a place to meet for destitute asylum seekers, refugees, migrants and anyone in food or social poverty.

  • Lunch for everyone on Mondays 10 am to 2 pm at St. Andrews Church Hall, Upper Hanover Way S3 7RQ.
  • Lunch for people seeking sanctuary, refugees and migrants to attend on Tuesdays at 12.30 pm at The Sanctuary. 37-39 Chapel Walk S1 2PD.
  • Lunch on the last Wednesday of the month for people seeking sanctuary, refugees and migrants from 1 pm at Victoria Hall, Norfolk Street S1 2JB.

The Community Grocery costs £5 to join, and then £4 for each shop. You can visit the shop multiple times each week. They also run courses to help learn how to cook on a budget and manage your money. The grocery is based at the Hope Centre, Bernard Road, S2 5BQ. Open Monday to Friday 11 am to 3 pm.

St Paul’s Community Pantry gives access to food surplus. Providing a helping hand in the Norton Lees and Meersbrook communities. They also have a nappy / baby milk bank and hold a community lunch every Friday.

Lunch clubs and friendship lunches

Consider joining a lunch club where you can enjoy a good meal and good company. A great way to develop new friendships in your local area, and to help with running the club or making lunch if you’d like to. From age 60 you can apply to join a club on the Voluntary Action Sheffield website.

Cooking

Learn how to cook cheap nutritious meals with the free Bags of Taste online home cooking course. Join via Whatsapp or on your mobile phone.  You also get tips and advice on how to budget and save money when shopping. To get you started you’ll get a free bag of food delivered to your door with all the ingredients you’ll need, some equipment and a local shopping guide.

Benefits

If you’re pregnant or have a young child under 4, apply for help to buy food and milk. You must be receiving a state benefit like Child Tax Credit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance or Working Tax Credit. You can also apply if your immigration status means you cannot apply for state benefits and earn less than £408 a month.

You get a Healthy Start Card you can use in some shops that is automatically topped up every 4 weeks. You can buy liquid cow’s milk, fresh, frozen, or tinned fruit and vegetables, fresh, dried, or tinned pulses, and infant formula milk that uses cow’s milk. The card also allows you to get Healthy Start vitamins to support your pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and vitamins for your baby and young child.
