Degrees pathways at Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme

At Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, we offer 2 different degree pathways - football coaching and sports science with both being "blended learning" environment. Blended learning is a combination of traditional instructor led activities with the use technology to reinforce this. All teaching is done in house at SWFCCP with residentials mixed in. 

Football coaching pathway
Our football coaching pathway is in partnership with University of South Wales and a 2-year foundation degree in community football coaching and development with the option of a top up third year where they will be awarded a BSC (hons) community football coaching and administration.

The modules which are studied on the foundation degree are:
First year:

  • Football event Management
  • Academic Research Study Skills
  • Introduction to Sports Development
  • Introduction to Sports Science for Coaching
  • Football Coaching Theory to Practice
  • Technical Planning & Reflective Practice in Football

Second year:

  • Football in Society
  • Youth Football Coaching
  • PE and Community School Sport
  • Sport Placement
  • Project Operations Management

The modules in the third year are:

  • Applied Professional Project
  • Business of Football
  • Strategic Sports Development
  • Critical Issues in Sports Coaching and Leadership
  • Community Football Coaching: Theory to Practice

During all three years students are expected to complete placements across the different departments in the community programme to develop their coaching skills, get real life practical coaching/ teaching experience and develop their professional skills along the way. 
Students also take part in weekly coaching workshops to help them understand the complexities of coaching which focus on topic such as behaviour management, different components of a session, different situations, and age ranges. 

Sports science pathway
Our sports Science pathway is run in partnership with Loughborough college and is a 3-year degree pathway. It is broken structurally down into 3 separate years which gives the students the flexibility to make a decision year on year which means that they do not have to commit to a three year course. 
The structure of the course is:
First year the students are awarded - HNC in sport and exercise science (level 4)
Second year the students are awarded - HND in sport and exercise science (level 5)
Third year the students are awarded - BSC (hons) Applied sports science (level 6)

On this pathway there are different ways which assessments take place which include -  reports, presentations, plans and programmes, video and portfolios. Each student is offered £500 a year to spend on CPD courses which over the three years adds up to £1500.

  • research project
  • exercise physiology 
  • performance analysis
  • issues in health and elite sport
  • applied strength and conditioning
  • sports policy and governance
