Hope Community Allotment
We grow organic vegetables and fruit on four allotment plots. We have two polytunnels and two greenhouses where we grow tomatoes, chillies, peppers, cucumbers and other vegetables that benefit from being grown under cover. Outside we grow a wide range of vegetables including potatoes, onions, various types of squash and courgettes, cabbages, broccoli and peas and beans. We also have some fruit trees and different types of soft fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries.
Users and volunteers are encouraged to suggest new vegetables and fruit they would like to grow.
You do not need any previous gardening experience to join HOPE. There is a wide range of tasks and activities on the sites that you can get involved in and we provide all the tools, seeds and equipment you need. More experienced volunteers are also available to offer friendly help and advice about growing fruit and vegetables.
We run three gardening sessions each week, on Monday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. The sessions start at 9.30am and finish around 12.30pm. Refreshments are provided including homemade soup and bread. Participants are asked to pay a subscription of just £1 for each session, which includes tea/coffee, lunch, snacks and any produce harvested that week.
No previous gardening experience is required, we just ask that you are keen to get involved and that you wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing! We can provide gardening gloves and have spare boots (although we can't guarantee we will have your size).
During the summer months, HOPE organizes a range of activities for our users and volunteers to enjoy. These include outings to the seaside, a trip on a canal barge, as well as an annual Open Day. There is a small charge for our outings and trips to cover coach and barge hire.
We also run a women only session. This takes place on Tuesdays from 1pm-2.30pm and will include refreshments and a lunch of homemade soup and bread.
We hope that by providing a female only environment, more women will feel comfortable getting involved with the project. It will give the women of the local community the opportunity to get gentle exercise, fresh air, build important social bonds and learn new skills.
